As of this fall, Law, Societies, and Justice has a new home! The program’s staff and faculty offices are now located in the Smith Hall Mezzanine, in between the 2nd and 3rd floors of Smith.

Thanks to this new space, students and visitors to the program will now be greeted by the friendly faces of Elizabeth Martin, LSJ Program Assistant, and Alex Lynch, LSJ Adviser, whose offices are located in the new spacious reception area in Smith M253. The new reception area includes a cozy place for students to sit while waiting to meet with an Adviser or Professor, as well as a shared space for supplies, photocopying, and student resources. Alyssa Penner, Senior LSJ Adviser, and Marilyn Cope, LSJ Administrator, also have offices off the reception area.

LSJ faculty offices occupy the hallway outside the reception area, along with a shared conference room for meetings, talks, and student events. Office space for the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies and the Center for Human Rights bookends the other end of the hallway, creating a sort of “social justice mezzanine” of programs!

This new space is an exciting step forward for the growing program as it is the first time most faculty and staff are housed in the same suite. LSJ quickly outgrew its old row of offices in Gowen Hall, especially in the past few years. During this time, LSJ began accepting a larger applicant pool to the major, four additional staff joined the program, and a new tenure-track professor was hired (see the new staff article for more about our new staff and faculty).

“LSJ has done remarkably well without ever having its own dedicated space, but we have always yearned for one” said LSJ Director Steve Herbert. “We are extremely excited about how much better we can build a vibrant and engaged community of faculty, staff and students now that we can gather together so much more easily.”

Please stop by to say hello and see our new space in person. Law, Societies, and Justice is hosting an Open House on Friday, October 30th, from 3:00-5:00pm. All are welcome to join us for light refreshments and a tour of the space. We look forward to celebrating with you!
